Personalized recommendation system traps you in your own bubble.

Personalized recommendation is often used in social media and video streaming platforms. However, this leads to echo-chamber and filter bubble, which is an environment where a person only encounters information that reflects and reinforces their own.

The world with polarized opinions

From personalized searches selectively giving the information users would like to see, users’ opinions become polarized as they don’t understand the opposite point of view. As a result, the world becomes more and more polarized.

User Journey Map

I started the project with user interviews to learn their touchpoints, pain points, and how diverse the user's point of view is. Please note that this user journey map focuses on comparing how accessible diverse POV is rather than the user’s emotion at each stage. I compared diverse POVs with the change of emotion at each touch point to maintain the usability of the platform.

HCD & EXP Design Process

I conducted numerous user interviews and design experiments in the initial stage of the project. User interviews focused on learning users' current experiences with personalised recommendation systems. Design experiments were conducted to test different methods of neutralising extreme opinions that users had. Possible design solutions were then created using these insights.

Experiment 1

Objective: Experiment if people change their initial opinion once they are given both sides of the story.
Insight: Hearing both sides of the story makes people less extreme in their opinions.

Interview 1

Insight: To prevent having a radical opinion, people first have to realise that their opinion is biased.

Interview 2

Insight: People realise that they are biased when an opposing point of view is coming from someone similar to them.

Experiment 2

Objective: Experiment with the most convincing method to make people realise that their opinions are once biased.
Insight: Opinion from somebody similar affected the confidence level of people's biased opinions. Less confidence can lead to adopting new ideas.
